Sherman Elementary Internship Blogs

January 7,2025 pre internship

My hopes and fears for internship. My hope for internship is to create new bonds and relationships with the people I will be working with and learn new things that I can carry with me in the future. My fear for internship is when i'm working with the students that they will not like me or wont want to work with me. But I also want to be able to help them and I hope the students I will be working with will like me.

January 8-10,2025 week 1

PROMPT: What are you most surprised by during your first week of internship and why?
The first day of internship caught me by surprise because my first day being there I connected with my students immediately and created bonds with them. Why?... Well My mentor Miss Fry put me to work with a group of kids and some individual kids and by doing that I was able to understand them and help them with their work. I enjoy working with my small groups and my 1-1's because its helping me become closer to them and help some get a better understanding of how they work as an individual.
PROMPT 2: What goods and/or services does your company provide to the community and how do they consider their role in the community, responsibilities to society?
Sherman Elementary provides education for kindergarten through 5th grade students and they teach the students new skills. And works with the students at their level and they are very supportive with their students and wants what's best for them and their education. The staff at Sherman Elementary are very kind and very supportive of each other and their students. Their role in the community is providing quality education and care to their students. They not only focus on teaching children, but prioritize the safety and overall well being of their students. They also focus of developing strong bonds and trust with each student.

January 13-17,2025 week 2

PROMPT: What is the biggest challenge you face at your internship?
One of the biggest challenges I faced this week was when my mentor was out sick and there was no substitute for the class and my class got split up into two groups and they had went with two other teachers and I say this was a challenge because i was with one group while the other group was with another teacher. It was hard because I wasn't able to work with my other students.
Prompt: How has or do you see your internship changing the way you consider that paths your future will take?
I can see myself taking the skills i've learned with me into the future because I do want to work with kids in the future and i've learned a lot from my mentor and other staff members around me. Working with kids right now is teaching me a lot and you have to have a lot of patience with kids but luckily I have the patience to work with kids, I hope I remember these skills i've learned and take them with me to my future career.
For my project I will be creating a binder with activities for students who don't speak english and it will help the students when I leave because as of now I hav been doing a 1-1 with a student who is fluent Spanish and I have been helping him with his numbers and letters and he's been improving so thats why I would like to make activities for english learning students.

January 21-24, 2025 Week 3

Prompt: What are you most thankful for in your internship experience?
Something I am thankful for in my internship is my mentor and my students, my mentor has showed me a lot that can be really helpful in the future when i decide on my career I am super for this opportunity to work with kids and for me to be able to be there for them and give them the support they need in their work i'm glad i'm able to be here and help them as much as I can but once I leave I am gonna be sad to leave them. All of my colleagues say I have a potential in a career working with kids. I am also thankful for them because they are all very helpful towards me and offer me good advice and they are all really kind to me.
Prompt: You are probably more than half-way through your project. How is it going? What challenges have you faced? What have you learned?
Although I am barley figuring out my project I plan on creating a reading and writing activity for the students to help them get a better understanding of their work. A challenge i'm facing is I am not too sure what activity's to do that can help them so I am a bit stuck on that and i'm not sure what to do but I will figure it out soon.

January 27-31st Week 4
Prompt:What advice would you give to a junior in high school who wants to pursue a career in the field of your internship?
Some advice I would give is to test it out first and see how it goes like for an example going on internship and working in the field you want to pursue because you are gonna want to see how it is in real life and see if it's something you would like to do. Since I want to work with kids I say patience is key when working with kids because sometime the kid is having a hard time understanding something and you probably will get frustrated when having to repeatedly explain to them the same thing but patience with kids will help you a lot now I'm still learning how to be patient with them and support them. Also being supportive will have an outcome In your career.
Prompt:  How have you seen your role develop or change over the course of your internship
I've seen myself develop in a lot of ways because I thought this was going to be hard at first but as things settled in it got somewhat easy and I have learned a lot of patience while working with the students. There are some days that really test my patience with them when there constantly telling on each other for the littlest things and that an be hard sometimes when all that is around you is kids all talking at once it can get overwhelming but the kids don't mean any harm or any bad towards it.

Prompt:  What advice would you pass on to future interns? What are the most important skills for a student to be successful at his/her internship? How could another student develop these skills prior to beginning an internship?
Some advice I would give to future interns going into any internship is to be patient and use communication skills, flexibility, and time management because having and using those skills at internship would be so helpful and it will make the experience much better. The way you can gain your skills is by getting the work experience so that way you can be more familiar with the work schedule and adapt to that routine. Using the skill of communication is going to be so helpful because what if you are confused on the thing your doing it and you ask your mentor and communicate to them what the problem is but also communication with other people in that job will also be good because you have more bonds and they typically will give you great advice.
Prompt: How do you feel about returning back to classes next week? Do you anticipate a different experience of school now that you have been immersed in a workplace? What are you looking forward to about coming  back? What are you going to miss about internship?
I feel okay going back to school since I have created so many bonds with the people around me. I do think that going back to school will be a different experience because I was in a teachers position and now I understand the teachers. I am definitely going to miss my students and mentor, I had the opportunity to create new bonds and connections with them and I feel sad that it is now over, I will mainly miss working with my students because every time I have been working with them I made the work fun by cracking jokes so that the student will be more encouraged to do the assignment. I will definitely miss the funny times with them.
